From today’s Arab Times:

A Kuwaiti woman has opened the first second-hand store selling top of the range designer clothes and accessories. Shafeeqa Al-Ali Al-Mutawa told KUNA such second-hand stores are very popular abroad, a matter which encouraged her to open a similar one in Kuwait. Al-Mutawa said she received a lot of encouragement from family members and friends who also offered some of their designer items to be sold at the store, in particular some seasonal items.’I make sure to display my used merchandise in its top quality where clothes are dry cleaned and shoes and bags are polished,’ she added. Some displayed items are not used. These goods are either given as gifts or unnecessary cosmetics that are bought by a lady and are not used, she noted. Original designer handbags at Al-Mutawa’s shop are seen at KD 22 (around $66) where a handbag of a similar designer near a store would be sold at KD 300 (around $900). Many women enjoy wearing designer clothes and handbags but cannot afford them and this shop is an opportunity for them to enjoy wearing such items, she added. Some merchandise sold at her shop are from other stores which had gone out of business. She noted that her customers whether Kuwait, Arab or foreigners visit her shop to buy some items for their personal use or as gifts for friends. (KUNA)

Does anyone know where it’s located? What are your thoughts on second-hand stores? Do you think this store will take off or crash and burn?

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

I would like to donate many things i dont need. Bas i thought to charity, if the revenues go to charity ya3ni. I had an idea about auctioning all the things i dont need (mazad) with the help of a charity and they get all the revenue. Bas me personally? I wouldnt buy second hand.

BTW they sell second hand stuff that are taken to laundry and some old stocks that are never worn. The money goes to many places in Kuwait such as donating machines that are not found in hospitals….

More promotions and it might just take off. Second hand stores are ok. In the Philippines we have “ukay-ukay”, our very own version of salvation army. Why not, right? :)

Yara the idea of auctioning off your items and giving the money away to charity is generous. It may be more useful than just giving them away.

Baboona Store thanks for the information! If you don’t mind I’d love to have their number. I’d like to go visit :)

Mackay haha funny name for Salvation Army. I’m going to keep an eye on this store and see if it launches other second hand shops.

It’s a nice idea, but I dont know how this will work out in Kuwait. I cannot wear previously owned anything… except for my mom’s and I share some things with my sisters, but that’s about it.. but hey! this is just me, and some people may find it a great idea. It is really very popular in other countries..

I’m the same way which is sadly why I don’t shop at vintage stores.

[...] Flows was? If you’ve been following this site (or the news!) then you’ll remember it as the second hand store opened by a Kuwaiti woman a few weeks ago. I had the opportunity to visit it and please don’t ask me for directions [...]

I think it depends on what people are buying second hand to what they can wear.
